Estrogen Levels and Testosterone Deficiency
Many of our male patients are surprised to find that they have estrogen levels and that sometimes their estrogen levels, after a certain age, are higher than that of many of their female postmenopausal counterparts.

As a man ages, his testosterone has a higher propensity of being changed, or aromatized, into estradiol. This higher ratio of estradiol to free (unbound) testosterone can cause many cognitive, sexual and physical dysfunctions.

As small degrees of testosterone are imperative to a woman’s quality of health and life, so are proper levels of estrogen important to libido, bone, emotional, and mental health in men. In younger men, estrogen works to check and balance testosterone’s powerful cell stimulating effect. However, with age, estradiol overpowers testosterone’s role in the body in two ways:

-Because of estrogen and testosterone’s similar appearance, estrogen can over occupy testosterone’s receptor sites hindering testosterone’s ability to function in the body as it once did. This may ‘trick’ the brain into thinking there is enough testosterone in the body and, therefore, slow down the endogenous production.

-Estradiol also increases the body’s production of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which attaches to free (active) testosterone in the blood making it unavailable to the receptor sites.

This is why some men experience a downshift in their libido and why their mood and well-being also take a plunge. Too much estradiol combined with too little testosterone can ultimately increase a man’s heart disease and stroke risk and cause benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarging of the prostate). Other factors that increase the estrogen-to-testosterone ratio are a zinc deficiency, alcohol intake, obesity, diuretics, and a vitamin C deficiency.

Ageless - Suzanne Somers
"As my personal sports doctor, (Dr. Darrow) has never given me a drug for any of my injuries. He is of the thinking that unless a drug is necessary, it is better to allow inflammation to do nature's work." (page 130).
